Truro is a carefully considered transformation of a previously fragmented Federation home in Sydney’s inner-west suburb of Stanmore. Shaped by a series of past renovations that had gradually compromised the clarity and function of the original dwelling. Incremental additions to the rear had resulted in a disconnected floor plan, where a bathroom and small storage room physically separated the main living spaces from the kitchen and rear garden.

The project sought to restore cohesion to the home while creating additional space for a growing family. Central to the brief was the desire for a home that felt connected and communal — one that encouraged the family to live together comfortably while improving access to natural light, ventilation and the rear garden.

Working within the constraints of a dense inner west site, the design focused on strategically carving out modest voids to draw natural light deep into the lower level, while carefully minimising the loss of usable floor area above. These interventions bring moments of openness and relief throughout the home, transforming previously dark and disconnected interiors into spaces that feel calm, breathable and visually connected.

Original features of the Federation house were retained and restored where possible, establishing a deliberate dialogue between old and new. Rather than imitate the existing fabric, the new interventions are clearly expressed, creating a defined threshold between the original home and the contemporary addition.

A restrained palette of natural materials — including polished concrete and warm timber finishes — grounds the project in a sense of permanence and simplicity. The result is a timeless family home that balances restoration with contemporary living, reconnecting the house to light, landscape and everyday family life.
